Paintings by Kerry Hurkett that fuse myth and reality, creating an opportunity to reflect on and question culturally embedded ideals and desires.

I live and work in suburban Canberra surrounded by a rich mix of the florid, bare, incomplete, decaying, pragmatic, pretentious and the surprising that makes the suburbs home. From theis mass of contradictions I have drawn inspiration for my work.

For this, my third exhibition at ANCA, I have taken images from suburban homes and populated them with mythical characters from romance and western novels. These characters are firmly embedded in our culture and could be recognised as comming from film, theatre, musical lyrics, advertising as well as literature. They have a complex cultural power. By fusing the images of reality and myth I am attempting to create an opportunity for reflecting on and questioning ideals and desires.
